Rick Waters left town with a carnival to escape the sentence handed down on his twenty first birthday by a judge in Palmer. He was going to be free, but at what cost.
Chapter Three
The sun had sunk below the tree tops and the hills cast long shadows as
Rick approached the backyard of his home after a five hour hike. He
realized when he turned the corner that led to the back steps that he
was not alone in the back yard. Sitting on the steps that led into the
house was a pack and tied to the railing was a very big German Shepard.
The
animal was already standing as Rick came around the corner, stretching
it's leash until it was taught. Instead of barking immediately from
surprise at the arrival of a stranger, the dog leaned forward as far as
it could and growled. It was a full grown Shepard, the size and shape
that breeders sell to law enforcement or military types and its sound
was deep and gutteral. When the first announcement was finished it
remained standing there in it's pose, taking another breathe to repeat
its warning.
As he was frozen in place, not wanting to move at
the risk of this dog breaking free and eating his face, the spotlight
on the house came on, illuminating the scene. The back door opened and
the screen was pushed back and out came Rick's oldest brother Paul.
After exiting the house completely, the dog became a different animal.
Instead of taught and ready the animal had become weak and submissive.
As Paul walked down the steps and out toward where rick was still
frozen, the dog hugged his legs until it could not reach him becasue
the distance was too far and its leash was too short.
"Ricky boy.." "Where you been all day?"
Paul
always acted like he saw you a littler earlier in the day whether he
hadn't seen you in two years or it had actually only been since the
morning. He was older than Rick but Rick was taller, and darker skinned
than his brother Paul.
Not just a stump of a man, he was
handsome too. His face was chiseled from time, both figuratively and
literally. He had seen the inside of many prison cells over a quarter
century of harsh living. It started after the crash and it continued up
until the last time Rick had seen him, about two years ago.
Alcohol
was his worse affliction. It ruled his days and nights. When Paul Walsh
wasn't drunk he was earning money to get drunk and then killing time
behind bars working off the things he had done when he was drunk. Rick
was well aware that his own future was just a couple of steps away from
Paul's and that scared him.
Rather than talk about himself, Rick asked about the dog first.
"How long have you had him?"
Paul
looked over his shoulder at the beast cowering on the ground. He
clicked his fingers and the Sheperd was up and ready to go, tail
wagging.
"Schultzy and me have been together for about a year now."
"I found him half dead on the side of the road one day and brought him home.'
"Somebody
hit him and left him there to die." "It took him six months to get back
on his feet". Now we can go anywhere and he's there with me."
This
time Paul stepped back and gave the dog a good tussle of its huge head.
Schultz picked up his paw and pulled Paul's hand down away from his
head each time Paul went to pet him. Rocky was the fourth that Rick
knew of. The first was a present from his father, and Paul loved the
dog until it was killed by a careless motorists driving down the
neighborhood streets. Since then Paul had owned only German Shepherds
and named them Schultz. This Schultz would have a sequel too if ever
there was a need.
"Does ma know you're here?"
Rick pulled
a cigarette from his pocket and stuck in his mouth. He reached the pack
toward his brother and Paul took one for himself. He tapped the filter
on the back of his hand a few times before placing one end in his
mouth. He began to pat hit chest over the pockets in his heavy flannel
shirt. He must have felt something in side becasue he reached in the
left pocket and pulled out a Zippo lighter. He flipped the top and
ralled the steel wheel over the flint, creating a little shower of
sparks and then a lame. Hit lit his cigarette and then reached out with
the flame toward Rick, ready to light his too."
"No, she's not home." I got here about four hours ago, thought you'd be here but you weren't"
"Where
ya been ricky?" He flipped close the lighter and placed it back inside
the pocket on his shirt. He turned to his pack and pulled a white
plastic bag from the front pocket. He zipped the pocket closed and
turned toward the picnic table under the big Willow tree in the back.
When he reached the table he walked right up on the bench and sat on
the table top itself. As he sat, he body rocked backwards and his feet
came above his head. Upon rocking back he found himself in the perfect
position, smiling from the loss of equilibrium.
Rick followed
him to the table and sat at the edge of the bench seat on the same side
as Paul. Paul moved over away from Rick so that he didn't get hit by an
arm or a leg that suddenly go astray. Rick pulled one leg over the
bench on the inside and left one out, once they both were in a good
seat, Paul pushed the bag towards Rick and offerend him his drink.
"You want some?"
Rick
reached up and grabbed the bottle. He gripped the pint of Southern
Comfort by the neck and slid the bags down far enough so that the cap
could be removed and a swallow could be had. Rick would normally give
the booze a smell and here was no different. Once his nose had
confirmed the contents, he raised his arm and consumed about a third of
the liquid.
He passed the bottle back as the fluid was still
warm in his throat. Smacking his lips becasue of the remaining heat, he
began to tell Paul what had happened at the courthouse.
"I have
to leave Ludlow." "They revoked my suspended sentence for the two car I
crashed and I don't want to go." "Fuck them anyways, It's six months."
They don't have enough beds in York St. as it is." "I don't drive." "I
havn't been in trouble now since the last accident in December, and
actually I've been wanting to get the hell out of town now for a long
time and here's my opportunity to go."
"Paul and Rick talked for
about an hour before the light from two headlights illuminated the back
yard. Mrs. Waters had come home from her day shift and had no idea that
both her sons were in the backyard drinking. The lights went dark and
the car door closed, it was only a moment or two before she turned the
corner and the scene was revealed.
To eveyone's surprise Schultz
was the first one to greet her. But not in the scary growling manner
that he introduced himself to Rick, but in the happy to see you puppy
way that a favorite family pet would greet it's family. Tag wagging and
standing up on its haunches, not pulling the leash in anger, but
pulling at the leash to let it free so i could share some love.
"Ooh,
OH!" "What are you guys doing back here?" She continued to walk toward
the back door once she realized that outside of a strange dog and a son
she hadn;t seen ion two years, everything was normal. She bent down and
pet Schultzy as she inquired about what was going on.
"How long
have you been her Paul?" It was more a question about how much trouble
can Paul get into in the amount of time that he was here. She knew him
as well as he protrayed himself and she was aware that trouble was
right around the corner whenever Paul was home.
"I got here this
morning." "I knocked on the door but I got no answer so I went through
the cellar." He must have done something becasue when Rick arrived he
came from the inside.
"Rick wasn't here."
It was almost
like being told on when something bad happens around the house and you
were supposed to be home. Rick had not kept his mother informed about
his leagal woes, and he hopes it remains like that.
"I was
looking for work." The best and most obvious answer for Rick was that.
His mother would only be happy if he was either working or looking for
work, he was after all almost twenty one.
"I bet.." She knew
that Rick looked for work maybe once a month. If he had been looking
for work she would eat her hat. "You two eat yet?" She stood up
straight and began heading toward the door before turning to face her
sons. "Well?"
Though he hadn't had anything to eat since the
morning and after walking all the way home from court, Rick decided
that he would forgoe food a little longer, if Paul and he could get
away for some more drink and conversation.
"I'm fine too Paul
piped in." He had eaten only an hour ago inside the house, when no one
was home. He had also checked around a few spots and collected fifteen
dollars from the cabinet, the hutch, and the dresser. "Rick and me are
going up to Meadowbrook for a slice of pizza though, we'll be back in a
couple of hours."
"She would protest if she thought it would
make a difference so she didn't. Instead, she turned away and went
inside. The screen and then the heavy back door closed and after just a
second, the spotlight that lit the yard went dark as well. Mrs Waters
would always shut off a light when she left a room, and this was no
different, even if there were people still outside, in the dark.

Guides Concerning the Use of Endorsements and Testimonials in AdvertisingThe above internet address connects you to an eighty one page .pdf document from the Federal Trade Commission describing the procedures that they went through to come up with a new guide for "Truth in Advertising", especially online.
Inside is the debate of a Federal Trade Commission inquiry into false advertising and the internet. The discussions that the Federal Trade Comission had with respondents who either complained about "The Guide" or offered their expertise in the debate are detailed on the pages of this FTC report. After reading the document, you will find that the debate takes away some of the freedoms that had been previously enjoyed by internet publishers, bloggers, writers, and advertisers. With the new, proposed changes, not only will the product maker be adversely treated for making unfounded claims about a product, but the publisher, the endorser, and the celebrity endorsement of the product could be busted for false advertising.
"Blogger, advertisers, writers, webmasters, HTML, CSS, programmers, coders, and anyone who has a hand in placing an ad or a recommendation about a product could find themselves paying far more than any benefits they garnished from the product maker for making the recommendation, ad post, or endorsement if the product proves unable to live up to the hype.
Inside "The FTC Guide", you will read what constitutes "Fair Advertising" and how the "average" person should be able to achieve any goal that is purported to be achievable by the product. The most noteworthy products that could be the first to go under the knife of these new regulations are in the weight-loss, and money-making industries. Highly advertised, these products could fall far short of their advertisements when the consumer purchases the product and attempts to achieve the same results as the endorsement. If they are unable, according to the ad, to get out of the product what the advertisement said, they would have a claim under these new guides for restitution and even punitive damages. "And forget about just going after the product maker, or the designer of the ad."
Every Publisher, blogger, product maker, celebrity, and product advertisement will come under this new umbrella of fair advertising.
"Read it." "Find out how it affects your business, new opportunities, or the way you speak online." "Don't get five years down the road to figure out there are rules out there that are being enforced, but not followed, by your team of online creators, website, or blog."

Poker is at war with its own definition. The U.S. government, led by George W. Bush, succeeded in delivering a major blow to legal online poker play when in November of 2008 he signed the most comprehensive restrictions of money processing into law.
